Brewing Success with EDLI Support
In the vibrant landscape of Chicago's craft beer scene, Funkytown Brewery stands out as a shining example of how targeted support can transform a passion project into a thriving business. Founded by childhood friends Rich Bloomfield, Greg Williams, and Zack Day, Funkytown Brewery has rapidly become a success story, thanks in part to the support of Entrepreneurial Development and Leadership Institute (EDLI).
From Humble Beginnings to Citywide Recognition
Funkytown Brewery launched in Q4 2021 with a mission to introduce craft beer to underserved communities. The founders' journey with EDLI began at a Small Business Mixer in November 2022, marking the start of a transformative partnership. In its first year, Funkytown generated $7,500 in distribution sales. By 2022, that figure had grown to $170,000, with projections for 2024 reaching $315,000. This exponential growth is a testament to the brewery's quality products and the strategic support provided by EDLI.

The International Tasting Alliance further validated their commitment to quality by awarding them Best In Class - Double Gold in 2023.

Since 2016, the Stone Community Development Corporation (SCDC) has been a pillar of support on Chicago’s West Side, providing essential services such as youth development, mental healthcare, and counseling for both children and adults. Founded with a mission to uplift and empower, SCDC has enriched the lives of countless individuals, fostering creativity and healing through its innovative arts and counseling programs.
Growing Support Through EDLI:
In November 2022, SCDC expanded its horizons through its introduction to the Entrepreneurial Development Leadership Institute (EDLI). EDLI provided SCDC with the opportunity to engage in a Small Business Mixer that introduced new funders and strategic planning around key partnerships. This connection paved the way for SCDC’s next major initiative.
A Transformational Partnership with Lurie:
SCDC’s current focus is an extraordinary $17.3 million partnership with Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. This project aims to significantly expand mental health services for young people on the West Side, addressing a crucial gap in care for children and families. The initiative, which broke ground in June 2024, brings together city and state funding, demonstrating the importance of this effort to the broader community.
Financial Milestones and Ongoing Needs:
To date, SCDC has raised $13 million in support of this monumental project. As the nonprofit moves forward, it will require an additional $1.5 to $2 million annually to sustain programming and wrap-around services, along with $500,000 per year for facility maintenance. With the leasing commitment of Thresholds, a nonprofit that offers mental health and substance abuse support, SCDC is well-positioned to create a comprehensive hub for mental health services.
Leveraging EDLI Support:
EDLI has played a key role in connecting SCDC with new funders and partners, contributing to the success of its latest initiatives. By leveraging EDLI’s network and resources, SCDC continues to broaden its impact while addressing the critical mental health needs of its community.
A Brighter Future:
The groundbreaking of the new facility marks a pivotal moment in SCDC’s journey. With continued support from EDLI, city and state agencies, and dedicated community partners, SCDC is on track to make an even larger impact on the lives of Chicago’s youth. However, the work is far from over. The ongoing need for funding to support the expanded programming and facility operations remains critical.
SCDC's mission is clear: to provide accessible, high-quality mental health services to the children and families who need it most. This new partnership with Lurie Children’s Hospital is a shining example of how community collaboration can drive transformative change.
