According to Tech Crunch, in 2022, just 1% of all venture capital funding went to Black-founded companies—an estimated $2.3 billion of a total $215.9 billion. For women founders, the rate was only slightly higher, at 1.9%.
Vision Statement: Empowering diversity in entrepreneurship, we envision a future where Black, Latino, and Women-owned businesses thrive and lead, with equal access to resources, opportunities, and funding necessary for unparalleled success.
Mission: To prepare Black, Latino and Women entrepreneurs to succeed and prepare their businesses for funding.
Values: Growth mindset, accountability, safe space, empowerment, and generosity.
Frederick Douglass’s legacy epitomizes the entrepreneurial qualities of innovation, leadership, and resilience, which are at the heart of EDLI’s mission to empower and support entrepreneurs. While historically recognized as an abolitionist, author, and orator, Douglass also demonstrated many entrepreneurial traits through his various achievements:
1. Activism and Advocacy: Although not traditionally linked to entrepreneurship, Douglass’s efforts to promote social change and advance the rights of marginalized communities reflect an entrepreneurial spirit. His innovation, resourcefulness, and leadership in pursuing social justice laid the groundwork for the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments to the US Constitution.
2. Publishing: Douglass founded and edited several newspapers, including the North Star and Frederick Douglass' Paper. Through these publications, he engaged in entrepreneurial activities such as managing finances, overseeing distribution, and creating content.
3. Speaking Engagements: As a highly sought-after public speaker, Douglass delivered lectures on abolitionism, the rights of African Americans, and other social justice issues. He often received payment for his speeches and used his oratorical skills to further his causes, effectively operating as a self-employed speaker and lecturer.
Book Sales and Autobiography: Douglass authored several books, including his famous autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave." He sold these books to support himself and his activism. The success of his autobiographies bolstered his reputation and influence as a public figure.
Frederick Douglass’s life and work underscore the entrepreneurial values that EDLI champions, inspiring us to empower and support entrepreneurs in their own journeys toward innovation and impact.
